ISLAMABAD: The Central Board of Revenue (CBR) has urged the taxpayers to avail general amnesty by depositing the defaulted taxes in principle amount by June 30, 2007 and get exemption from the default surcharge and penalty for clearance of the outstanding dues.

Imran Ghaznavi, Official Spokesman for the CBR in a statement issued here on Monday said that the CBR had announced general amnesty by issuing SRO 463(I)/2007 and SRO 512(I)/2007 for defaulters of sales tax and federal excise duty whereby a taxpayer will be exempted if he deposits the principal amount by 30th June, 2007. CBR urged the taxpayers to avail the above said facility so that long outstanding dues are settled.

The spokesman clarified that the customs duties, collected in first 11 months (July-May) of the current fiscal year stood at Rs 114.279 billion as compared to Rs 117.991 billion in the corresponding period last year indicating a negative growth of only 3.1 percent. The growth in total imports was 9.7 percent only and not 20 percent as reported. During this period, the import of dutiable items was less by 3.3 percent as compared to last year, whereas, increase in duty-free imports was 33 percent.
